Design and construction management services for the city of Nanaimo

This project involved an extensive trunk sewer rehabilitation program in which 4km of existing asbestos cement sanitary sewer was upsized with innovative pipe bursting technology.

Pipe bursting was selected primarily because the process minimized the environmental impacts associated with an extensive open cut, parallel sewer, up to 7m deep in loose saturated soils adjacent to the Millstone River. The river has a highly rated salmon spawning system.

The project also saved the City 20% in capital cost over the conventional twinned and pumped options that were evaluated during the preliminary engineering phase.

The project was named Trenchless Technology Magazine’s North American Project of the Year – Rehabilitation, a Canadian first.
