Link Lane is a new pedestrian and shared-space environment, between Sandringham Road and Walters Road, providing a direct connection to Eden Park. In a shared space, pedestrians have the right of way, though they must not impede the passage of a vehicle. The development is part of Auckland City Councils, Rugby World Cup streetscape improvements. Opus worked with artist Billy Apple who used the concept of the ‘golden ratio’ to generate the black and white concrete pattern in the lane – black for rugby and white for cricket. The design responds to the aesthetics, context and heritage of the area. Once implemented, the design will create a contemporary addition to one Auckland’s oldest inner city suburbs.
