The Watsons Bay Baths are located at Marine Parade, Watsons Bay in the southeast corner of Sydney Harbour. The concrete and timber swimming facility that is open to the public was displaying signs of deterioration and as such the local Council commissioned Opus to undertake a detailed inspection of the facility. The inspection was to report on the safety of the current facility and ongoing repairs that would need to be implemented to maintain the baths use for another few years in their current form.
Opus undertook a site inspection of the facility above the waterline with the use of boats, and commissioned divers to inspect pile conditions below the waterline. Furthermore, a pest inspection was undertaken to determine the degree of infestation. A detailed report was developed indicating the current condition of all structural members (eg piles, headstocks, joists, bolts and safety fencing), recommending and prioritising proposed repairs and developing an initial estimate of cost for repairs.
The recommendations outlined in the report provided the client with a list of works, initial cost estimates and priority of work that would be required to provide a safe and functional swimming facility for public use.
